When you visit Bhutan, it is literally like stepping back in time. Sure, in many ways the whole of the population is in on the game, but it's a game they play honestly and proudly. I have visited Bhutan perhaps eight times. I love it as a destination - so different to life at home, so friendly, so approachable. It helps that tourism is a mainstay of the Bhutanese economy, but even so, I know my reception would be equally warm - it's in the nature of the people. However, after so many trips and being enthralled by the bright and rich colours, the exotic customs and rituals, I thought it time to explore the subject differently. In Bhutan - Myth, I have chosen to render the images in monochrome, working with introduced grain and layers of softness and blur. My aim is to create a portfolio that explores the myths and legends of Bhutan, myths and legends that are still lived today.

For Polar explorers, the North West Passage has almost legendary status. History tells of many expeditions that tried and failed to find a short cut through the polar ice, navigating through a labyrinth formed by islands and sea ice. In winter, it’s hard to tell what is land and what is not. Of course, the first nation peoples of this area have known their way around these areas and while they may not have had the long distance journeys in mind, they were certainly better adapted to life above the Arctic Circle. 

Aurora Expeditions mainly offers voyages around Svalbard and to the east of Greenland, including Iceland. However, once or twice a season, they venture a little further west into Canadian waters – an area more correctly called Nunavut.

I have been travelling to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands for nearly 20 years. I’ve visited at all the different times of the year, which are possibly of more interest to a wildlife photographer than a landscape photographer. The animals and birds follow a relatively predictable timetable, but as far as the weather is concerned, it couldn’t care less about the season. 

Yet, as amazing as every voyage is, together they build into a portfolio of experiences and memories. A single voyage will produce a sensational body of work, while a dozen or more expands the lexicon. Each voyage is amazing; each return trip provides something new, something different, something completely unexpected.

This is a large portfolio. I don’t expect you to view the images in a single sitting, rather it is designed to present a wide range of moods, subjects and opportunites that will face a photographer voyaging south. 

In 2025, I spent two months in Italy, including Sicily and Sardinia, and a quick tour through parts of France. For a European viewer, the locations might have little connection with each other, but from my Australian perspective, they all share the romance of the European Renaissance and Baroque periods. Of course, many of the locations pre-date the Renaissance or have nothing to do with the Baroque, but that’s not the point. This is not a history textbook, it’s a series of my impressions and my interpretations. 

I’ve treated and graded the images to acknowledge these influences. Many of the images have textural overlays, again referencing the Renaissance and Baroque artworks I love. When you see these paintings today, there is invariably a patina of age in the paint and the colour – which I have tried to reflect in these photographs.
