The skill of a portrait photographer includes the ability to relax and engage with the subject, producing a pose and/or an expression that is genuine, natural and believable. Looking at your photo, which technically is very good in terms of composition, light and exposures, can you see why the judges might feel this image looks a little stilted? If you were shooting it again, could you better pose or relax your subject to look more natural?
